Art Writer’s Wednesday 11 - Tumblr Artist
Ernesto Artillo | on Tumblr (b.1987, Spain)
Thanks to his masterful grasp of collage and mixed media art, Spanish visual artist Ernesto Artillo crafts picturesque stories which combine fashion, nature and art together in the most unusual and eye-catching ways.
Artillo layers sleek fashion cuttings with graceful textures hues, creating mixed media works that burst with refinement, beauty and a certain maturity. As he plays with the shapes and colours of architectural landscapes, natural settings and bold high fashion cuttings, he creates collages in which structure softly flirts with femininity.
Artillo’s collages stand out through their finely constructed compositions; these come together to form a new order and to give us a sneak peek of this artist’s compelling vision of the world. His art is also filled with brilliant references to religion and mythology which, by adding power and emotion to his work, give the latter a sophisticated aura.
What makes Artillo’s creations so fascinating is the way in which each separate element meshes together to form harmonious scenes that take on a life and reality of their own – almost as though they pertained to an alternate, two-dimensional universe. His collaboration with menswear designer SixLee is a particularly good example of this: in it, Artillo offers his delicate interpretation of the designer’s Spring/Summer 2014 collection, by highlighting its soft silhouettes with dreamy floral cutouts and brush strokes.
